If memory serves me correctly, this is the third model of PS3 that Sony has the luxury of presenting. The Tokyo Game Show is one of the most important industry of videogames where companies present new consoles and titles. The first big surprise of the day has given Sony, who introduced a new PS3 model which is lighter and smaller than in the previous cases.
This new PS3 weighs half the original cast and their size is half of it, and is even thinner than the PS3 Slim. The initial launch will be in the U.S. this September 25, where the 250GB model will cost $ 270 and the 500GB will retail for $ 300. The Japanese release will be two weeks later and from then on it should not take long to get the rest of the globe.
In short, it's the same technology that the previous editions, so if you already have a PS3 I think making the purchase of the new model would not be necessary.
