Forty years of satellite images of our planet

We are celebrating today the 40th anniversary of the Landsat satellite program . This program is the acquisition of satellite images of Earth with the longest continuous operation. Over the years, Landsat has collected petabytes of images, offering a historical perspective of change that our planet has undergone. This information can help researchers and independent nations, make informed decisions about their economic and environmental policies. In conjunction with the USGS and the Carnegie Mellon University , we are working to make parts of this huge collection of publicly available images form of sequential video (taken at time intervals) from the surface of the Earth . With them can travel through time, from 1999 to 2011 to see the transformation that has taken our planet. Will see changes such as deforestation of the Amazon, urban growth in Las Vegas or the difference between the snow country with the change of season. Below are some examples:

http://i.imgur.com/KSrz8.png
The sequential scan through the Amazon rain forest shows the spread of deforestation between 1999 (left) and 2011 (right).

The rapid growth of Las Vegas, Nevada between 1999 (left) and 2011 (right) is visible on Landsat sequential scan.

A seasonal sequence created using MODIS images , where each video frame represents one week, shows the differences between areas covered by snow in the U.S. between February and August 2002.

We believe these are the largest video frames that have been created. If you could see the video in full resolution, a single frame would terapixeles 1.78, ie the equivalent of 18 football fields of screens placed edge to edge. In 2008 the USGS opened access to full Landsat archive for free . Google Earth Engine allows access to this information and makes it useful for scientists and people around the world. In the following video may learn more about the history of the Landsat program and how Google Earth Engine was used to process and analyze this huge archive of satellite images of the planet.

Landsat congratulate these 40 years. We are proud to make this coarse file available to the general public, and for deep analysis of scientists and policymakers around the world. Visit the site Google Earth Engine to experience all the interactive tours through the videos sequentially. First trojan for the iPhone and iPad is identified by security expert

A security specialist Kaspersky claims to have identified a trojan designed for Apple's mobile devices - iPhone, iPhone and iPod. The worm was disguised as a digital application called "Find and Call" and also have a version for Android devices. Apple has removed the malicious application of the store.
In one post , Denis Maslennikov, Kaspersky Lab expert, says that installing Trojan horse (malicious program that opens up security holes on the device is installed), the application sends the contact list of devices to a remote server. The data are used later in this remote server to send spam via SMS. The main target users in Russia.
Maslennikov said he had contacted Apple and Google to report the malicious application, but did not yet return. In App Store, the app no longer appears, but you can still find it via search engines.
For the "Wired," the Apple spokesperson Trudy Muller said only that the application was removed from the App Store for "unauthorized use of your contact list, a violation of the rules of the store."
It is not the first time that an application "steals" the catalog of contacts in iOS devices. In 2008, the game Aurora Feint was removed from the App Store for security and privacy problems. Aurora sent the contact list of users to their own servers without using encryption features.
More recently, the Path, application to share posts, photos and videos, also captured private data from users of iOS. The company apologized for what happened and claims to have deleted the data collected.
The "Find and Call", unlike the Aurora Feint and Path was developed exclusively for stealing data from mobile devices - what would rank as the first malware for Apple's system.

Fruit Ninja Galaxy S3 and a real knife

Lately I've had the opportunity to play a video game called Fruit Ninja Mobile, well known to anyone with an iPhone or an Android smartphone. You see, the game is to cut fruit, and if you cut several at once you get extra points, but you also have to avoid cutting the pumps and you can not fail to more than three fruits. Normally, in this game that used to cut the fruit is our toe, which would serve as a sword, but in the video below we have someone playing with what looks like a real knife.

It's a shame that a great smartphone like the Samsung Galaxy S3 is treated that way, but we assume it will not hurt because it has a glass screen with Gorilla Glass 2.

Has anyone tried this with your phone? In my view, would be a little uncomfortable using a real knife.

Self-Driving Car : gold Car google ?

More than 30,000 people are killed each year in crashes despite huge advances in auto safety. The overwhelming majority of those crashes are caused by human-driver error.
Computer driven cars could reduce traffic deaths by a very significant degree, said David Champion, head of auto testing at Consumer Reports, but only if all cars are computer-driven.

Google’s cars allow drivers to take control to steer and step on the brake, but are designed to eliminate the need to do so. Otherwise, the car uses GPS, traffic sensors and artificial intelligence software to drive.Google's self-driven cars rely on video cameras, radar sensors, lasers, and a database of information collected from manually driven cars to help navigate, according to the company.

No hands: Steve, who is legally blind, sat behind the wheel during a recent test drive and showed off to the passengers that no hands were needed

"We announced our self-driving car project in 2010 to make driving safer, more enjoyable, and more efficient. Having safely completed over 200,000 miles of computer-led driving, we wanted to share one of our favorite moments. Here's Steve, who joined us for a special drive on a carefully programmed route to experience being behind the wheel in a whole new way. We organized this test as a technical experiment, but we think it's also a promising look at what autonomous technology may one day deliver if rigorous technology and safety standards can be met. "

Update

Google is developing self-driving cars, and has already tested one that has spent over 140, 000 miles on the road in Nevada, where it is street-legal. They even let a blind man try a self-driving car. The car detects where other cars are in relation to it, as well as the curb and so on, follows speed limit and traffic laws to the letter, and knows how to avoid people. It also uses a built-in GPS to find its way to places.
Cadillac plans to release a scaled back, more simple version of similar technology by 2015 - what they call "Super Cruise", which isn't total self-driving, but does let you relax on highways. It positions your car in the exact center of a lane, slows down or speeds up as necessary, and is said to be meant for ideal driving conditions (I'm guessing that means ideal weather, no rain or snow, etc.). I am looking forward to such tech. If enough people prefer to drive this way, and the technology works reliably, it could result in safer roads with fewer accidents. Another possibility is that, using GPS and maybe the ability to know ahead of time which roads are most clogged, they can find the quickest route from place to place. On the other hand, hacking could be a real concern, and I hope it doesn't become a serious threat. It's looking like we're living more and more like those sci-fi Everything is Online worlds depicted in fiction for a long time.

Autonomous car
An autonomous car, also known as robotic or informally as driverless or self-driving car, is an autonomous vehicle capable of fulfilling the human transportation capabilities of a traditional car. As an autonomous vehicle, it is capable of sensing its environment and navigating on its own.  A human may choose a destination, but is not required to perform any mechanical operation of the vehicle.

Google driverless car
The Google Driverless Car is a project by Google that involves developing technology for driverless cars. The project is currently being led by Google engineer Sebastian Thrun, director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and co-inventor of Google Street View. Thrun's team at Stanford created the robotic vehicle Stanley which won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge and its US$2 million prize from the United States Department of Defense. The team developing the system consisted of 15 engineers working for Google, including Chris Urmson, Mike Montemerlo, and Anthony Levandowski who had worked on the DARPA Grand and Urban Challenges.
