Scientists want to use a solar weapon to destroy meteorites

http://i.imgur.com/RpJ3EaJ.jpg

Is this idea the start of construction of a device like the Death Star from Star Wars? The meteorite fell in Russia a few days ago and the close passage of an asteroid 16 hours later have produced some panic among the population, and many fear a giant space rock end to our world in a few years. To avoid such a horrible death, two California scientists have to work and have begun to develop a weapon capable of destroying meteorites.

His invention is called Solar Energy Directed Targeting of Asteroids and Exploration, or DE-STAR for short. It is a system that uses orbiting solar power to fire a powerful laser beam capable of deflecting the great meteor off course to avoid collision with the Earth.

The two scientists have been working on the idea into reality for more than one year, but to carry it out need to use existing technology (solar energy collection) and one that has not yet been developed, but are expected to be in a couple of years (a powerful laser destructor).

Different sizes have been considered for the DE-STAR, from one measuring approximately 2 meters to another that was about 10km in diameter. One thing is clear: the bigger, the more powerful the laser shoot.

Will this be too much science fiction or a reality in a few years?

The DARPA equip planes with laser turrets

 http://i.imgur.com/1rE1CHg.jpg

The first aircraft equipped with a system to launch lasers was a modified Boeing 747, but was not very successful to say and the project was shelved. Still, the idea still stands and the DARPA people still looking for a way to make this work. He is currently working on two projects: the High Energy Liquid Laser Area Defense System (HELLADS) and Aero-Adaptive/Aero-Optic Beam Control (ABC).

HELLADS, you can see up here is a 150kW system that can be used to attack both from the air and from the ground. The idea is that the laser gun that projects can fit in a 1 cubic meter, which means that even cars could have one.

The other system, the ABC, is used as a defensive weapon. This is a turret designed to shoot any missiles that are directed towards the plane, but it becomes a little difficult since in most combat missiles come from behind, but obviously you can also shoot in that direction.

Both projects are currently well advanced and HELLADS begin testing next year.

What do you think about using technology for war?

This is a real weapon 50Kw laser destroys airborne drone and steel sheets

http://i.imgur.com/a5lmN.jpg

The cinema has accustomed us to the future is filled with systems based on laser weapons, from guns to swords through guns. By now the twenty-first century can expect that these weapons become real, in this case the hand of this model Rheinnmetall German brand with a power of 50kW and an aspect (unromantic from the point of view of science fiction) like this:

The gun has been tested on a number of test objectives and, apparently, the result has been satisfactory.

In one of them was the laser cannon can rip holes through 15mm steel plate at a distance of 1km. Then, the computer system was able to detect the presence 3Km drone flying away at a speed of 50 meters per second. When approached 2Km drones laser cannon took action and shot down like mosquitoes.

The last test was based on a mortar casting metal balls moving in the air at 50 meters per second. In this case the system was able to detect the ball before it hit the ground and then calculate the mortar position from which it was launched to destroy.

It's not science fiction despite appearances, actually the same company already had similar patterns of less power (10kW) and is easy to foresee that other higher end manufacturing more destructive capacity and a longer range of action. In fact this technology may make obsolete much of the current weapons including tanks, guns on ships, aircraft armament and perhaps Death Stars.

PHOTOS: 5 technologies that will never exist

 http://i.imgur.com/lJ3Rh.jpg

A. - Part forth this joy of science fiction films is to look amazing toys, and imagine how they could be so outlined the website io9.com .

Some of these tools have come to life with the passage of time, however there are any of these items that could not ever exist. Czech here what they are.

1) or Sword Lightsaber Laser: Besides being an object rather impractical and dangerous, there is no engineering work that is able to capture the light in this way, it is possible to emerge from a dish and comfortable retreat the user. Besides energy sources to generate impressive tricks of light sabers, would be impossible to find.

2) Human Teleportation: Teleportation requires defragment million shares in an object and then play without losing any snippet elsewhere. Divide the human body is thus impossible, and would be almost a suicide attempt.

3) Time Machine: This object can not dreamed of creating for his operation would need the whole energy of a black hole for a trip.

4) Traveling faster than light: To perform this feat would require a power stronger than all the universe, that would be uncontrollable and qeu despite being in a spacecraft, arriving at journey's end everything will disintegrate to its path.

5) Resuscitation after a cryogenic sleep: Maybe a brain can be preserved frozen, but this process does not guarantee the recovery of all information.

LaserSaber : Super Weapon

Are you ready to wield the world's first and only LaserSaber - a radiant blade that pulses with energy.

LaserSabers are energized by the light of Wicked Lasers, harnessing the power of the force. The LaserSaber features an ultra smooth magnetic gravity system that can "power up" and "power down" the blade.

"Here’s how it works, the laser energy that enters the LaserSaber is first diffused by a built-in optical element. Then the diffused laser enters the internal diffuser tube, which distributes the laser’s energy evenly along the blade.
Inside the diffuser tube, there is a metal sphere which is suspended permanently inside. This sphere’s movement caused by gravity creates the beam grow effects. There is a magnet hidden in the tip of the blade, which causes the ball to magnetically lock in place. The magnetic lock can be disengaged by bumping the S3 laser with sufficient force.
The blade is constructed from a 32″ long, 1/8″ walled polycarbonate tube, made in the USA. The blade is strong and highly durable, however, they should only be operated in a controlled environment by professionals. Unlike lightsaber replicas, LaserSabers are powered by highly powerful and dangerous lasers. User and observers should wear safety goggles at all times."
