SSDs are fast and are very nicely over traditional hard drives and also higher than 7200rpm. The great problem of a single SSD is its price, costing several times more than a regular hard drive. The SSD prices will not go down soon, so it probably still some years.
Seagate is one of the leading manufacturers of hard drives and SSD in the world and are planning to focus on new projects. The company has decided to stop the production side of 2.5-inch drives (for laptops) from 7200rpm to focus on SSDs. Why? Well, it's simple: most laptops are beginning to make more use of SSDs, while we all know hard drives are still widely used in computers and desktop use in laptops is not as common as before. Besides this, the introduction of hybrid discs has the flash memory of the SSD and available to many by an acceptable amount.
According to David Burks, marketing director of Seagate, the company will no longer produce the said records from the end of this year.
The traditional hard drive is much loved by many, but the truth is that as far as speed is lagging a bit dated.
